Program Welcome

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Jack Frost / Big Boulder Race Team 2024-2025 ski season! We hope you find this guide useful for the season ahead. And, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of the Coaches or Jack Frost Big Boulder Racing Foundation (JFBBRF) Board Members at the contact details below. Feedback is greatly appreciated as we continue efforts to improve communications, especially with our newer family members.

Take a moment to review the material on this page and ask questions that you may have.

Yours in powder,
Jack Frost Big Boulder Racing Foundation Board

Schedule & Logistics

The Development Team meets Saturday & Sunday starting mid-December through early March and runs from 9:00-3:00 on Saturday and 9:00-3:00 on Sunday at Big Boulder (BB). Check the calendar for specific BlackOut dates.

At Big Boulder, the racers convene outside the Incline Lodge to promptly at 8:45 start skiing at 9:00. Exact meetups for this season at BB are TBD. We recommend you arrive by 8:15 to gear up with racers outside and ready to go (helmets/goggles, gators, gloves, etc.) to meet your group.

Bags can be stored in the bins in the lodge at BB. In addition, this year the lower lodge below the Big Boulder trail will be available to the ski race team (along with the general public). We expect boot bags, etc. can also be stored here during the day.

The Development Team Racers are assigned into their groups over the first few weekends. The coaches will work with you to find the right group based on age and ability. Please provide your coach with your contact information (names, cell phones, email addresses) in case of emergency on an index card.

At lunch time, the coaches will drop kids off at the same place as start of day. Parents will pick up their athletes up there. After lunch, the Racers should gear up and meet back outside at the same meeting spot and will return back at the end of training to be picked up by parents..

Gear & clothing

Racers are expected to wear typical ski gear: waterproof jackets/pants, helmets, goggles, gloves/mittens, etc. Most wear gators to cover their neck and face on cold days. Helmets are mandatory.

Jack Frost / Big Boulder Race Team offers the option each year to purchase team jackets, and parents are notified on timing and details via email. Keep an eye out for updates to uniform ordering here. Another option for new families is to ask around for “hand-me-downs”. Many families will have jackets to sell when their children have grown out of them.

Jack Frost/ Big Boulder Race Team Wear can be purchased online.

Coaches can provide advice on ski type/length, etc., but families are expected to handle this individually. Many families go to local Pocono ski shops where they have knowledgeable staff and sell both new gear and used gear on consignment. You can also sell your own used gear on consignment in return for store credit.

Meetings – Pre-season meetings are held in the Fall (this year on Zoom) and upon season start, there will be parent meetings in the lodge – locations TBA as scheduled.

Events

Events and parties are a special part of building the JFBB Race Team community.  The following events typically take place each year and are sponsored by the Jack Frost Racing Foundation.  Check the calendar for the dates.

End of Season Banquet – mid March  – usually held the Saturday after the last weekend of the program.  End of season dinner and dancing to celebrate the season with racer gifts and awards, and scholarship awards for the high school seniors.  The event also typically has a silent auction as a team fundraiser and other fun activities for both the adults and kids. More to come on venue this year, and volunteers always needed for the Banquet Committee!

Pizza party – early/mid Jan – location and date/time to be confirmed).  Families gather to share pizza, drinks, and live music.

Potluck – mid-Feb – Usually on a Saturday night in the lodge. Each family brings a dish of their choice to share. Again, includes cash/credit bar and live music

Family Fun Race – date TBD – typically held the Saturday after the last weekend of the race program.  Friendly family competition to see if the parents have a shot at beating their racers.

Fun races

Fun Races are typically held on Sunday afternoons throughout the season.  They are an exciting way for the kids to get acclimated to racing in a fun and *mildly* competitive fashion.  The JFBBRF provides racing bibs for the kids to borrow and medals at the end of the races for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers.  Parents line the sides of the slopes to cheer the racers on with cowbells.  Race locations can vary based on terrain availability and other activities at the mountain that day.  The medal ceremony typically takes place right after the race team is over for the day around 3:00. Medal ceremony locations TBD this year… stay tuned.
